Headaches and Migraines
Headaches and Migraines
Why do you get migraines?
Generally there is a reduction in oxygen to the brain. If the brain receives less oxygen via blood, it will increase the amount of blood flow to increase the overall amount of oxygen received. In order to increase the amount of blood flow it must dilate the blood vessels that supply blood to the brain. When these vessels dilate, it stretches pain fibres that cover the outside of these vessels. When these pain fibres are stretched they are switched on and begin sending pain signals into the brain, consequentially, you perceive pain.
Headaches and migraines may also be caused by a restriction at the vertebral joint complex in the top of the neck. This then causes inflammation and tension of the joints, muscles and blood vessels at the base of the neck and skull, which then transfers pain up into the rest of the head.
So what can chiropractic do to help?
By performing gentle but specific adjustments to the neck and upper back to potentially reduce soft tissue tension, we may be able to restore the normal function of the muscles and vertebrae in the neck, and normal length and tone in the muscles, which may remove the tension that could possibly cause headache and migraine symptoms. There are many factors that contribute to headaches; our Chiropractor’s are experienced in dealing with many conditions and will provide you with the necessary advice and treatment where appropriate which may address your condition.
